Jane Hoggard

Jane’s work views traditional genre - still life, landscapes, abstraction and the ordinary lightheartedly.
Working in focused bursts reflects Janes’ personality and lifestyle. Her subject matter is pulled together from travel, nature and those close to her but she has a deep appreciation of her natural home environment in Northern NSW.
Large and small scale works showcase her proficiency and dexterity with mixed media. Energetic yet sensitive line work dominate her work with illustrative drawing practice a regular ritual.
Evident in her experimentation of subject matter and mixed media compositions, Jane uses collected snippets such as maps and manuals to create authentic, sentimental and curious ‘snapshots’ in her smaller works and oil, acrylic and graphite in her larger works. There is a freshness in her work and she uses mixed media without limits when building a composition.

[SOLD] Night Swimming Oil and acrylic on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1700 by Jane Hoggard The mustard brown heavy canvas tent is probably relevant in any memory of many ‘70s babies. I do remember the faux white plastic window panes ours had. The still life (my ‘go- to’ shape starter), was pretty enough but the ingrained Maori myth and legend story telling I grew up with in NZ and camping holidays took over this one. Clear skies all around.
Jane Hoggard Stacking Cups Acrylic on dressmakers paper Framed behind conservation glass with white timber frame 120x90cm $1750 This large abstract, loosely painted, precariously stacked Wedgewood cups from our overfull crockery cupboard, lovely childhood images to reflect on and a constant creative source and shape making ‘go-to’. Lucky. Large acrylic original on dressmakers paper, beautifully pressed behind conservation glass and white timber frame. Featured in May 2020 episode “Selling Houses Australia” (Deception Bay)
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard The Mill Oil on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1850 "Dutch great Aunt Stein and Uncle Mart lived in a part of Rotterdam that was, I guess part suburbia, part old structures like this old ‘mill. Lucky enough to have been at their dinner table and remember it was the drizzly mornings, smell of burnt toast balanced by the tall cereal dispensers of milk chocolate hail we were encouraged to ‘pour on our bread’ that I remember… that and cousin Martin stapling his own finger one night. "
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard The Harvest Oil on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1850 THE HARVEST Successful harvest, done and dusted. As the season finishes, the mills sails fly off in excitement or overuse no doubt. This piece again holds some of the go-to shapes that, appear without effort or intent – my love of sailing, rotors and anything industrial, flying plants and pods, beacons and welcoming, guiding lights. At the moment, these shapes are comforting and appear in the initial ‘brains-storm’ of a canvas, the ‘don’t judge just draw’ phase, the ‘yay I have made a start’ phase. Paynes grey, my old friend gets to show itself off in this piece. The Dutch orange is allowed to shine too.
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard Oma's Trifle Mixed Media on Canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1700
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard Skyline Oil on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1850 "The second of my favourites in the last year. This guy is Thorndon-weekend-Wellington-at its summer festival BEST…the colours, the way the hidden houses sit against the greenbelt, the mountain ranges behind…makes me happy kind of homesick, not sad. I took a stroll down one of my favourite New Zealand Artists lanes before I painted this…Nigel Brown, took a deep breath and grabbed a new tube of Indian yellow oil paint and a grey oil stick of course."
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard The Point Oil on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1850 "The forms and go-to shapes that trot along beside me in the studio, appear without effort or intent seem to be these comforting beacon shaped lighthouses, or something imitating that. I often block them out after the initial “brain storm” but this one was allowed to stay as the paintings story quickly became clear at the end…standing back I thought, how cool, home keeps providing the most amazing source of inspiration, it comes out naturally as the memory and experience of growing up with these views seem to control the oil sticks and brushes rather than me. I used to think it was bad not knowing what the end result of the painting would be like, I don’t think that anymore."
[SOLD] Jane Hoggard Morning Track Oil on canvas Oak frame 104x104cm $1850 "This Mt Victoria green belt area sat right behind a very funky stain glassed house that Mrs Hema used to own. Our first proper rental together and the best location for city social life and the best that Wellington can offer. Complete with its own ghost. Friendly. The morning track was dark and thick with needles but it had this patch of grass that just made you want to romp-around-in halfway along… front row seat to look at one of the prettiest cities I have ever lived in … and that harbour."
