John was born in 1958 and raised in the Sutherland Shire, Sydney. He first took up painting in 1983 after showing a keen interest and aptitude for drawing. He is a self-taught artist who has always admired the fresh loose approach of the early Australian artists from the Heidelberg School. Whilst John's paintings are traditional in essence, they have a wonderful 'painterly' feel much admired by both his peers and the public. John paints primarily in oils and his subjects range from landscapes, the occasional still life to coastal scenes. His paintings are full of activity as he captures people enjoying themselves in everyday life and leisure. John has won many awards for his work including the Australian Artists magazine's national seascape competition in 2000. He is also a regular contributor to that publication having featured on eight occasions.
