Sharon McIlwain
Still life and the placement of treasured objects in the home has always been of interest to Sharon. In this series she has painted objects and flowers that surround her in her studio, in her home and from childhood memories. “Painting these objects gives them an everlasting life and deepens my appreciation of these simples treasures.”
These new works consist of small still life pieces created on up-cycled cork placemats. The cork substrate and still life genre are woven together with pieces of original cork forming part of the composition. Snippets of text harvested from old books add a quirky note to these vignettes.
Sharon is a full-time practicing artist who lives and works from her home based studio in northern NSW. Her creative inspiration is gathered from the creative processes of paint application, colour palette, texture and the element of the unknown outcome. “There is always an element of surprise and something new to learn in every painting.”
