In recent years I have developed a fascination with porcelain which led me to do a residency in at the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in Jingdezhen, China. Jingdezhen has been a centre of the production of porcelain ceramics for more than 1,000 years and is a city full of artisans. In Australia, ceramics artists usually do every aspect of their work whereas in Jingdezhen, I was able to have a master artisan make a mould of the original pair of legs and they were fired in one of the city’s public kilns. In this spirit of collaboration, the director of the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute, Wenying Li, applied her traditional painting skills to the surface, reflecting the local environment. The clay body from Jingdezhen is particularly luminous and sort after.

These figures are inspired by the feeling of crackling summer storms when the air is thick and lightening splits the sky. Some love affairs have the same feeling! Hand built from Southern Ice porcelain.
