Place Making – Hastings Point
This piece captures the feeling of place. The overlay of movements of wind and waves, the protrusion of headland meets an endless ocean: all working together with the
ferocity, power and grace of their natural laws.

ETRE
Être represents the human experience of ‘being’ within one’s own timeline. Often unfathomable, the perception of time and how much time one has, has perplexed, motivated, and driven the human experience for centuries. To truly reflect on where one sits within their timeline can cause tangential shifts within the course of a life: regret leads to reconciliation,
complacency leads to courage, perspective leads to vision.

Coffee Pot, Candelabra and Fruit (2022)
Acrylic on canvas
Tassie oak frame
33 x 33 x 5.5cm
$650
The objects in these paintings are a combination of both common and precious items found around our home. Keeping in mind the exhibition title “Style de Maison” I wanted to capture elements of simplicity and grandness through the objects and palette.
The concept of home for me is a space created over time with family that is comforting, safe and relaxed. It holds many memories especially in the objects that we have surrounded ourselves with.
The coffee pot set, vases and candelabra all hold connections to my past. The coffee pot set was only ever displayed in our “china cabinet” when growing up. It was too precious to be used, therefore carrying connotations of a grander time that was out of my reach.
I deliberately chose these precious objects to sit by humble fruits and flowers grown in our garden. Although familiar, the fruit and flowers carry a sense of simple beauty. Like the objects that they sit side by side with, they are infused with the spirit of life that we have imbued into them.

“Afternoon Light on an Ancient Land” There is something that touches your soul when you look upon magnificent ancient rock formations. This work was inspired by a late afternoon walk along coastal rocky clifftops.

These painterly abstraction in blown glass are conceived around the primitive concept of “increase” regarding species, but altered to express a desire for increase in biological diversity in a contemporary sense. Wylah Circling holds an interest in the large Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos that occur around where I’ve lived since the late 1980’s, Ara Militaris is about a critically endangered species of Macaw we’ve been fortunate to see in Costa Rica, and Thinking of Forshaw honours one of Australia’s great contemporary Ornithologists – Joseph Forshaw, whose texts accompanied the brilliant avian illustrations by William Cooper in a number of books about birds.

The Silent Room (2020)
acrylic on canvas
Framed in oak
60x60cm
$1650
Karyn Fendley’s fascination with silhouettes and shadows continues indoors in this series of still life paintings that explore extremes of lightness and darkness, and the transient liminal spaces created by shadows. Silhouettes of flowers and foliage contrast with the simple geometric shapes of vases, tabletops and bright windows in this suite of paintings that bring together botanical and manmade forms.
“Still life paintings have a special power to capture a moment in time, they rest on the edge of something about to happen. These artworks reflect on the passage of time, the transient moments and turning points in life. When viewing these paintings, consider the endless variations of what might happen and the objects that symbolise feelings that can’t be put into words. The brief beauty of flowers is a reminder of nature’s transience and the impermanence of life, a reminder to treasure every moment. ” Karyn Fendley

Oil on Canvas

As women we try so hard to be everything for everyone. We don’t spend much time looking and reflecting on the incredible strength and beauty that is inside each and every one of us. There is a light inside all of us – we just have to let it shine and acknowledge it. In legends, the Peony is linked to healing and attraction, and since the Chinese word for ‘Most beautiful’ also translates to “Peony” it makes sense that they are known to symbolise beauty and love. These Peonies in my works reflect the light and love inside us all.
