Autumn Soirée explores concepts of love, compassion, vulnerability, chaos, laughter and everything in between.
Mirka Mora: is one of Melbourne's most revered and treasured artists. Mirka and Georges Mora immigrated from France in 1951. They made an indelible and everlasting impact on Melbourne's cultural fabric.
Close to John and Sunday Reed, Charles and Barbara Blackman, Barrett Reid, John and Mary Perceval (later to become Lady Nolan), Lawrence Hope, Arthur Boyd, Joy Hester and Albert Tucker, Mirka and Georges were instrumental in the re-establishment of the Contemporary Art Society in 1953, in Melbourne.Mirka's seventy years of making art have produced an extensive array of works using unique techniques—drawing, painting, embroidery, soft sculpture, mosaics and doll making. Her distinct and outstanding imagery has emerged from her passion for reading, her love of classical Greek mythology, her desire to reclaim and make sense of her childhood and ultimately her unwavering belief in the strength of humanity to unite us all.
Toni Clarke: A practice, for me, is about letting go; there is no room for fear and no time to procrastinate. I want to remove the intellect and find a playful way to let the paint dance on the canvas without boundaries.
The crux of my work is looking at life in a more positive way. It is good to recognise the dark, but also important to see the light.
In a world full of uncertainty, we should remember how free we were when we were children.
Peter Berner: is a stand up comic, cartoonist, writer, artist…and he has been a TV host, radio host, petrol station attendant and auctioneer. He graduated from NAS in 1995. He has been a finalist in a number of art prizes including twice in the Archibald, Muswellbrook, Caloundra…the National Still life prize, Adelaide Perry drawing prize and Lester Prize. Also, he’s been nominated for a Logie twice.
The two portraits continue my work in character. I have spent many hours using many mediums drawing manipulating abstracting faces. They fascinate me in the way landscape does for landscape painters. I would argue they are, in their own way, my landscapes…
Helen Oprey: I paint the way I FEEL which is inevitably influenced by what is occurring in my own life. I tend to use my art as a mechanism to understand, process and ulJmately find peace. I wear my heart on my sleeve so I am an open book. I am insanely curious about human psychology and welcome all feelings, vulnerability, chaos and everything in between as it is a pathway to growth, wisdom and spiritual wealth. Bring it on.
Kylie Findlay: In 2010 Kylie Findlay completed a Bachelor of Visual Art at Southern Cross University, majoring in Painting. Her current practice is based in Currumbin, Queensland. Working with both acrylic and oil paints, she creates mostly abstract landscapes, flora and figurative work and sometimes portraiture. She’s been a multiple finalist in the Neumann Portrait and Dean Cogle Portrait Prizes, participated in group exhibitions in Queensland and Victoria, and sold paintings in Australia, NZ, USA, Canada, Norway and the UK
When it all seemed like a good idea, until it wasn’t. Contemplating the point when ideological ideas become unreasonable.
Laurie Mckern: After working in graphics/illustration, I moved to Sydney, Australia and slowly made the move to a full time painter. My art practise includes working with gouache, oils, oil pastels, encaustic wax and fabric. I am always evolving and expressing my surroundings as they change. The more I travel – the more I enjoy outdoor sketching and painting landscapes and nature. However, my favourite thing to paint is always people, especially women.
