Peter Berner
Unknown Beauty
Acrylic on ply wood
Timber frame
47x45.5cm
$1490
Peter Berner is a stand up comic, cartoonist, writer, artist…and he has been a TV host, radio host, petrol station attendant and auctioneer.
He graduated from NAS in 1995. He has been a finalist in a number of art prizes including twice in the Archibald, Muswellbrook, Caloundra…the National Still life prize, Adelaide Perry drawing prize and Lester Prize. Also, he’s been nominated for a Logie twice.
The two portraits continue my work in character. I have spent many hours using many mediums drawing manipulating abstracting faces. They fascinate me in the way landscape does for landscape painters. I would argue they are, in their own way, my landscapes…

Darkness and Light
Acrylic on canvas

This painting is my dissection of how to survive the dark side of someone else's personality. After years of enduring unspeakable hurts I realised my power resided in my response. I understood that the darkness in another bringing out the light in me was the ultimate way to gain the empowerment I needed to survive and eventually thrive.
Hold onto your light, especially in times of darkness. The light will always show you the way.

This is a very personal painting about a difficult journey not of my choosing. Through the female figure I express emotions of shock, despair and sadness. The little bird symbolises both fragility but also incredible strength. This little bird can fly. The colours of red and yellow represent the presence of grief versus new beginnings. I believe that although challenging times have the ability to break us down we can be rewarded with incredible growth. The relationship between the woman and the bird communicates the power of surrender while holding onto the belief that we may be stronger than we think. Never underestimate a woman who has no choice but to survive. Watch her eventually thrive.

Lady In Red
Mixed media on canvas
91cm x 61 x 5
$800
Lady in Red is a celebration of the mature woman. Putting on your red lipstick and smelling the roses. Knowing that you have done everything in your power to be the best person you can be. The ability to look at yourself and others directly in the eye because you are at peace with yourself. Red represents sitting in one's power while the yellow signifies the reward of happiness that follows a life well lived.

When it all seemed like a good idea, until it wasn’t. Contemplating the point when ideological ideas become unreasonable.
