The 44 - Heather Matthew
90cm H x 90 cm W
Framed behind glass
I work primarily as a paper artist. At an artist residency in Central Australia I made paper from spinifex and kangaroo grass, exploring what it means to reside in a place for generations. Layering man-made artefacts on handmade papers, this artwork speaks of the broader issues of human occupation and colonisation. The circular rust mark is made from the rusted lid of a 44 gallon drum, an ubiquitous object you often find on any rural farm or outback station. The two sheets of handmade paper are stitched together to represent time and the human traces we leave behind.
This artwork was awarded a Highly Commended at the 2021 Ocean Shores Art Expo.
